Remote Desktop Hosting - Terminal Server Hosting

Remote Desktop Pricing Options - Virtual Servers and Dedicated Servers

You can host your Remote Desktop Hosting Server with either a virtual server or a dedicated server.

Virtual servers are a good choice for smaller companies who have 10 or less users who do not require a lot of disk space.

A dedicated server for remote desktop hosting is a better option for companies who need more users accessing the server, more disk space or companies who need to host applications that require more powerful hardware.

What is Remote Desktop Services? It is the new name for Terminal Services also know as RDP Hosting.

Remote Desktop Services enables multiple users to login to a single server where they can access and run applications and programs.  Remote Desktop Services runs on the Windows Server 2008 family of operating system.  Users use remote desktop to access the applications on the server. They can connect from a windows computer or apple device. The users can share the programs and data on the server. Users can also be restricted from seeing each others data when required.

A very common question is can I print from a remote desktop server to my local printer(s). Yes you can. Many years ago there was an issue printing to local printers but not any more.

An example might be employees of a company logging into a remote desktop/terminal server to access their QuickBooks software.  Or to access their desktop on the server to access a Microsoft Office application.

Another example would be logging into the terminal server to run a custom application written in Microsoft Access or any number of other applications businesses use.

Common uses include: Hosting desktops, remote users access to corporate applications, mobile users, custom application hosting, data intensive applications, application developmnet.

What is a Remote App?

A Remote App is an application which is running on a remote desktop server but appears to be running locally on the client machine. The difference for the end user is they do not login to the Server and see a Hosted Desktop, rather they login to what looks like a local application on their desktop.

Why would you run an application as a remote app? Several reasons including security. Running as a remote app prevents the end users from access the servers other applications, files and settings. How many users have inadvertently shut down a server rather than logging off?  A remote app also prevents users from compromising a server by inadvertently downloading a virus while surfing the web.

Many companies offer their applications via Remote App to simplify delivery. This is also known as offering an application as a SAAS offering (Software as a Service).

Benefits of Terminal Services - Central Management - Reducing Cost

Having users login into a central server to access programs simplifies many tasks since the applications are only installed once on the server rather than being installed on each user's computer.  This would apply to installing applications, updating applications, backing up data.

Terminal Services is also great for applications which require a lot of bandwidth and processing power.  Many applications do not perform well when accessed over the internet but they do with a hosted terminal server because all of the processing is happening on the server with the user only viewing the screen.  A single user on a 28.8 kb dial up account will have good performance.  This means a dial up user who uses a hosted terminal server can surf the web and access applications at the speed of the terminal server's high speed internet connection.

Benefits of hosting your Terminal Server in a datacenter

Datacenters increase reliability and uptime because they have redundancy in: internet connections, power and ups systems.  Each server is leveraging millions of dollars in infrastructure.  Our SLA (Service Level Agreements) provide 100% uptime guarantees for Power and Network connections.  Most offices have 1 internet connection and datacenters have 4 or 5 connections blended together to provide 100% connectivity.

Controlled Environment and Security - Datacenters are staffed 24x7 for remote hands in case any server needs to be touched.  There are multiple levels of security including locked doors, cabinets and video surveillance.  The environment is also controlled to regulate the moisture content of the air.
